Sustainable Packaging and Recycling

Recycling

Packaging plays a part in delivering our beverages to customers safely. Yet as natural resources become depleted, energy costs rise, and landfills become full, we must reduce its environmental impact. Beverage packaging is already among the most recycled consumer packaging, but we must address its impacts throughout its lifecycle. We work with suppliers to make package design resource-effective, and we partner with governments, businesses, and communities to promote recycling. In our production facilities, we are minimizing waste and increasing the amount we recycle. Packaging plays a part in delivering our beverages to customers safely. Recycling at our facilities

In all of our production facilities, we minimize packaging waste from the supplies we receive, and we strive to reuse, recycle, or recover as much as possible of our waste.

Reducing Packaging

We continue to reduce the amount of materials in our beverage containers. Our .5 l Aquafina bottle is a great example of our efforts at reducing packaging materials. By the end of 2008, we will have reduced the overall gram weight of the bottle by over 50% from when it was introduced 6 years ago. It is the same great product inside but now with a lighter, more sustainable bottle to recycle.

Blow-molding is a manufacturing process used in the plastics and polymers industries to create hollow but strong containers for their clients. Polyethylene Terephthalate (P.E.T.) bottles are manufactured using the blow-molding process. Currently, we are constructing a blow-molding production line at the Raleigh production facility. By implementing the blow-molding process, we will eliminate the ordering, shipping, storing, handling, cleaning, and sterilizing of pre-made P.E.T. bottles. One tractor trailer load of blow-mold pre-forms eliminates approximately ten tractor trailer loads of pre-made P.E.T. bottles. By implementing the blow-molding process, we are eliminating ten daily trips from Raleigh, NC, to Cheraw, SC, (240 miles round-trip) which results in 2,400 miles not traveled on a daily basis; 12,000 miles on a weekly basis; and 624,000 miles annually.

Creating a more sustainable community is a top priority for Pepsi Bottling Ventures. Our quality of life is directly linked to the health and well-being of our communities and our environment.

Our Environmental Sustainability Initiatives serve as a means to measure progress and inspire critical thinking about our priorities and the impacts of our behaviors. All of us – our employees, our vendors, and our customers – can take actions every day that will make the communities in which we operate better today and create a positive legacy for future generations.
